NEW York-Filipinos here gathered over the weekend to honor the victims of last month's killer floods in Cagayan de Oro. Many Filipinos, mostly Cagayanons, staged a prayer rally to commemorate the Typhoon Sendong disaster at the St. Sebastian Auditorium in Woodside, Queens. The Cagayanons from New York and New Jersey were joined by other Filipinos who hail from Iligan City, Dumaguete City, Bukidnon and Negros. These places were battered, too, by Sendong last Dec. 16 and Dec. 17. One of the organizers, Sylvia Labial-Buhian, said the activity was made possible through the efforts of the De Oro Women Society, Cagayan de Oro- Misamis Oriental Association NY Chapter, Association of Bukidnons in America, Dabawenyos of USA Inc., Cebu Engaging in Building Unity and 2000 Hail Mary group.
Highlights of the event were the lighting of the candles and offering of flowers in memory of the dead and the missing. An ecumenical ser vice led by Roman Catholic priests and pastors followed. "We may be thousands of miles away from Cagayan de Oro but we haven't forgotten. We have united to show our support and share our fellow Cagayanons' grief," said Buhian. Organizers accepted donations that would be sent through Monsignor Villamil of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.
