Seoul conducts firing drill near sea border with Pyongyang

SOUTH Korea's Marine Corps conducted live-fire drills Thursday near its tense sea border with Pyongyang, the first such exercise since Kim Jong Il's death. Marines stationed on border isLands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong staged what officials said was a routine two-hour drill involving K-9 self propelled howitzers and Vulcan cannon, according to KBS news.
A similar fi ring drill in 2010, held jointly with the United States, provoked North Korea into shelling Yeonpyeong IsLand and killing four South Koreans. The incident, which sent cross-border relations to a new low, prompted Seoul to drastically beef up military presence on five front-line isLands near the maritime border. PNA/XINHUA
