UN Security Council slams election violence in DRC

THE United Nations Security Council on Friday condemned the election-related violence in some parts of the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC), which reportedly killed at least 18 civilians, and called for efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.

The condemnation came as Vitaly Churkin, the Russian UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for December, was reading a statement to reporters after the 15-nation UN body was briefed by the special representative of the secretary-general for the DRC on the situation in the country
in the context of the electoral process. The members of the Security Council "condemned the violence that arose in some parts of the country," the statement said. "They urged all candidates and their supporters to refrain from any acts of violence, provocation and incitement to violence before and after the publication of the provisional and fi nal results of the polls."

The DRC held presidential and legislative elections on Monday last week. A total of 11 candidates are running for the presidency, and candidates numbered more than 18,000 for the 500 seats in the National Assembly, the parliament of the nation. The offi cial results are scheduled to be known on Dec. 6, reports said. PNA/XINHUA
