Pinoy beats Taiwanese in tennis championship

CEBU'S rising junior player Arthur Craig "Iggy" Pantino routed Taiwans's Tony Kuo, 10-4, in the Boys 16-under division to advance Saturday to the second round of the Dunlop Sport Junior Tennis Championships 2012-Visayas Series at the Cebu International Tennis Center in Consolacion, Cebu. Pantino, who is joining the 16 under boys division for the first time this year, was intimated at first by Kuo. "We heard a lot about the player's background. He has defeated several top local junior players in the past but we told Iggy to focus on the game," Lourdes Pantino, Iggy's mother, said. She added that the warm weather, which the foreign player is not used to, may have played a factor. Pantino will face the Hong Kong-based Mosqueda brothers in the next round.

He will take on Dave in the 16-Under finals, and Dewey in the quarterfinals of the 14-Under division. Dewey advanced after blanking Zodie Carl Balundo, 10-0. Meanwhile, another Cebuano junior player, Jan Noy Seno, had contrasting fates in two divisions. He lost to Josh Kinaadman, 10-3, in the Boys 14-Under but beat Adrian Parangan, 10-6, to advance to the second round of the Boys 16-under. The country's former no. 1 in the 12-Under division, Jerome Romualdez, will debut in the 14-Under division today against Manuel Francis Navales. He lost his opening match in the 16-Under division to Jessie Villarin 10-6.

In the Unisex 10-Under division, Vince Lominoque defeated Cesar Kristofer Salimbangon, 10-4, and will next face Eric Louise Longakit, a 10-4 winner over Dweyne Mosqueda. According to tournament director Mario Craiz, despite the event's implementation of the "No Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) Pin, No Entry" policy, they were able to attract 111 players from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Manila, Bohol, Tacloban, Leyte and Cebu. The matches will resume with Cebu's top women's player Sally Mae Siso gunning for her first 18-under girls title this year. PNA
