Int’l speakers to attend Davao Sports Tourism Forum


THE Sports Tourism Forum to be held on Jan. 31 at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao will be graced by international speakers who talk about promoting tourism through sports. Zachary Saul Mobijohn, a member of the executive committee in organizing the Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, will be present in the forum to talk about the successful marketing of the popular Asian sport event. Mobijohn has been in the tourism industry for nearly 15 years and is also the current president of the Sabah Dragon Boat Association.

Princess Galura has organized many successful events in the Philippines. She is Consultant of IMG Philippines, a global company that specializes with sports, fashion and media businesses. Galura was the project director of the recently concluded 22nd Advertising Congress held in Camarines Sur and the highly successful Camsur Marathon of 2010. She was also involved with IMG's successful sports events such as the Philippine Open Badminton, JVC Badminton Tournament and Live Public View. Galura will talk about the importance of good planning. Her lecture will include managing, staging and planning towards successful sports tourism event.

International Rugby Union coach, educator and administrator Matthew "Matt" Cullen is currently the general manager and coach of the Philippine Rugby Football Union team nicknamed Volcanoes. He will attend the forum to talk about the success story of the Volcanoes through the Sports Tourism program. Cullen has been with the Philippine team since 2006. The Volcanoes have continuously impressed other teams during Asian tournaments through Cullen's coaching.

Joining these international speakers are equally credible local sources in the field of sports and tourism. TV producer/ host Nimrod Quiñones will talk about the role of television and media in promoting sports and destinations. William Ramirez, former chair of the Philippine Sports Commission will also be present to lecture on the role of national sports bodies in supporting sports tourism. Ramirez is also the chairman and chief executive officer of Sports for Peace Mindanao and has successfully staged many sporting events.

On the other hand, Charlie Manio of Cebu Pacific Air will present the "Role of Travel and Tourism Entities in Promoting Sports Tourism." Manio is the director of advertising and promotions of the country's largest national flag carrier. After the forum proper will be a panel discussion on the issue, "Is Davao ready to be a sports tourism destination?"
