Abap hopeful for potential Visayas boxers

THE Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) is optimistic it will be able to discover potential boxers from the Visayas to join the national pool of boxers and to represent the country in international competitions. Abap executive director Ed Picson believes Visayan provinces have fresh and raw talents in boxing that need to be developed that is why Abap is going to the provinces, not only in the Visayas but all over the country.

Picson graced the holding Thursday of the Visayas boxing championship for ages 15 to 18 years old, hosted by Dumaguete City and participated by nine boxing teams coming from the cities of Mandaue, Cebu, Tagbilaran in Bohol, Bago ang Bacolod in Negros Occidental, Northern Samar, Leyte province, Tanawan, Leyte and two teams from Dumaguete City. The Abap official lamented that the country has no gold medal yet for boxing in the Olympics.

Because of this development, Abap chair Manny Pangilinan had promised to give P12-million for the first boxer to win a gold medal for the Philippines as an incentive, according to Picson in an interview in Dumaguete. PNA
