THE Cebu City Sports Commission and the volunteers of the Cebu Chess Festival are now documenting their attempt at breaking into at the Guinness Book of World Records with the biggest number of participants in a chess tournament. The effort, which gathered a total of 43,157 participants, mostly from the 90 public and elementary Schools of Cebu City, concluded Sunday night with the 14-year-old Allan Pason coming out as the grand champion. However, the attempt did not stop there as CCSC and the volunteers are now busy compiling documents and certifications to be submitted to the Guinness World Record.
"The Sports Commission and Guinness chess volunteers are now in the process of preparing the comprehensive and voluminous documentations composing of video, photo, tournament documents and certification from the witnesses and the like," CCSC chairman Edward Hayco said. CCSC will use the second option to get the recognition that is to document and compile evidences of the record attempt and submit these to Guinness World Records (GWR) for verification. However, this option requires the detailed evidences in the specific guidelines and the general evidence requirements of the Guinness World Records.
The standard verification process will take four to six weeks and if successful, Guinness World Records will provide the organizers with a certificate that will commemorate the record-breaking achievement. The other option, which would just take hours after the event, was to hire a GWR adjudicator to verify the records and activity on site.
But the CCSC chose the second option because the first was expensive. Aside from the records of the tournament itself-starting from the classroom and School wide tournaments and up to the Grand Finals, CCSC will have to compile photos, videos and written testimonies from the three witnesses and two experts who were present during the event.
However, even if the recognition of the chess event is only halfway-CCSC is now planning for another world records, the World's Largest Arnis Competition or Class. "Next project, we plan to conduct another ambitious grassroots program, this time in Arnis, and we may consider setting a world record for largest stick fight tournament or class. We will communicate with Guinness on the matter, like what category. Guinness will guide us on what will be the rules and requirements," stressed Hayco. CCSC chose Arnis because it originated in Cebu. PNA
