Thursday, 17 May 2012 00:00

TWO Davao woodpushers captured gold medals in chess in the just-concluded 2012 Palarong Pambansa held in Lingayen, Pangasinan. Rowelyn Joy Acedo and Ella Grace Moulic, both from Davao City, also beat their early favorite rivals from the National Capital Region in the penultimate round. The 13-year-old Moulic pocketed the gold in Board 2 of the girls' secondary chess after scoring 6.5 points in seven games. She also combined for a total of 11 points with 15-yearold Acedo, who took the individual bronze in Board 1 with 4.5 points in seven games that earned them the gold in the team event. Acedo, who already earned a full scholarship with the La Salle University in Taft starting next School year, defeated reigning Shell Youth chess champion Jane Karen Enriquez to avenge her early setback in Manila.

"This is a big improvement for the Davao Region Athletic Association chess team," said James Infi esto, regional director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines during a press forum Tuesday in Davao City. Also present during the forum were Austin Jacob Literatus, who earned the silver in the individual boy's secondary and the bronze in the team event, coach Alfred Moulic and City Councilor Jackson Reyes. "I'm really very proud of them and we from the city will continue to support them," said Reyes, who gave a financial help to the chess players together with Mayor Sara Duterte- Carpio.

In last year's Palaro, Acedo, who graduated high School at the Jose Maria College, won the individual Board 1 gold while Moulic settled for a silver. Moulic, a second year high School student of the Holy Cross of Davao College, also ruled the national age-group held earlier in Cagayan de Oro. Acedo, Moulic and Literatus are now both set to play in the Asean Age-Group Chess Championships slated on June 10-20 in Hue, Vietnam. Li teratus, 15, of Dona Carmen Denia National High School also emerged champion in the NCFP Grand Finals held earlier in Batangas to also represent the country to the Asian Youth Chess Championships on June 22-23 in Sri Lanka. Petecio falters in her Olympic bid in China

Thursday, 17 May 2012 00:00

THE bid of PLDT-Abap Women's Team to qualify for the Olympics fi zzled out as Nesthy Petecio suffered a close 10-11 decision loss to Valeria Calabrese of Italy at the lone qualifying event for women - the Aiba World Women's Championships at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in the industrial city of Qinhuangdao 300 kilometers northeast of the capital Beijing. The bout was fi ercely fought, highlighted by some one-upmanship as the 20-year-old Filipina was wrestled to the canvass several times in the third and fourth rounds. The fi rst round was even at 2-2, the second went to Petecio 6-5, then the Italian was given the third at 9-8 and both fi ghters picked up two points each in the fi nal round, giving Calabrese the one-point edge. Petecio, the lone Filipino entry in the Olympic 51-Kg. Flyweight Division, was despondent but said "I really tried my best but I guess this wasn't for me. I'm sorry if I let my countrymen down." There are only three Olympic weight divisions for women: Flyweight (51 Kg.), Lightweight (60 Kg.) and Middleweight (75 Kg.) Her two team mates, however, who are competing in the non- Olympic weight categories, got the better of their respective rivals in their opening matches.

Alice Kate Aparri beat Brazilian Cielia Costa, 15-11, in the 54- Kg. Bantamweight division to set up a second round meeting with Nimini Jayasinghe of Sri Lanka. Aparri, the World Championship bronze medalist, led after a 1-1 stand-off in the fi rst. Then the 27-year-old Baguio City native started dominating at 8-4, 11-8 and fi nally 15-11. Josie Gabuco, 25, pummelled her gutsy Venezuelan opponent Yarineth Gonzalez Altuve in four rounds, 6-3, 13-6, 18-9 and 24-13. The Puerto Princesa lass scored repeatedly on accurate right straights and left hooks to the head even as the Venezuelan led off with combinations that rarely hit their mark. The Filipino women boxers are coached by national coaches Elias Recaido Jr. and Mitchel Martinez. Team manager is Aiba International Technical Offi cial and Asian Women's Boxing Commission member Karina Picson. PNA

Koronadal, South Cotabato eye hosting of 2015 Palaro

Monday, 14 May 2012 00:00

SOUTH Cotabato offi cials have declared to bid for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa when it returns to Mindanao in 2015. Koronadal City Mayor Peter Miguel said the city government is planning to team up with the provincial government of South Cotabato to help bring the national games to the area for the third time. South Cotabato and Koronadal City jointly hosted the Palarong Pambansa in 1996 and 2007. "The Palarong Pambansa is an excellent venue to promote our city and the province to the rest of the country. So we're hoping to host it again in 2015," the mayor said. Miguel, who visited the city's delegation in the ongoing Palaro in Lingayen, Pangasinan, earlier last week, made the initial sales pitch for the games' hosting with officials of the Department of Education. He said he came to Lingayen to personally deliver the fi nancial assistance of P10,000 each to city's delegates and "to study how the hosting of Palaro is done."

As part of the city government's initial plans for the Palaro, Miguel said they intend to start the repairs soon on all Schools that might be used as billeting quarters of the participating 17 regional athletic delegations. "I want all billeting areas situated within the City of Koronadal for easy access to the different playing venues," Miguel said. In March, South Cotabato Gov. Arthur Pingoy Jr. initially signifi ed to bid for the hosting of the 2015 Palaro through the improved South Cotabato Sports Complex in Koronadal City. The governor said the hosting of the Palaro will help further propel the province's economy and promote i ts world-class tourism destinations. Aside from the South Cotabato and Koronadal City teamup, no other local government in Mindanao has so far signifi ed intention to host the 2015 national games. The cities of Bacolod and Cebu have signifi ed intention to bid for the next year's hosting of the Palaro, which would be held in the Visayas area. PNA
