Prosecutors trash illegal arrest raps vs six cops

SIX police officers can now breathe a sigh of relief after the City Prosecutor's Office cleared them recently of charges filed by a suspected robber-carnapper they arrested late last year.

In a joint resolution, prose-cutors dismissed the cases against Chief Inspectors Reynante Royo Reyes and Harvey Serrano Abellanosa, SPO3 Glenn Abalde, SPO1 Francisco Granada Jr., PO3 Ferdinand Capistrano and PO3 Eugene Solidarius.
Reyes and his group were then assigned with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit of the Cagayan de Oro Police Office.

The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by one Edgar Echavez who accused the cops of arbitrary detention, falsification and perjury.
Echavez claimed that he was illegally arrested and detained at the Maharlika Detention Center over trumped up charges of robbery, rape and carnapping.

Assistant City Prosecutor Mary Sheila Pestolante, in her findings, however stated that "there was a valid arrest and the existence of probable cause" thus the charges against the policemen were dismissed for insufficiency of evidence.

Reyes, who now heads the Regional Special Operation Group (RSOG), said, "The decision of the city prosecutors is a vindication for police officers who risk their lives and careers against criminals like Echavez who uses proceeds from illegal activities to fight their cases in court. As a field officer, I am aware that the risk of being counter-charged by an influential criminal is part of my Job."
