LTO-10 named Red Orchids Awardees


The Land Transportation Office-10 was named recently by the Department of Health as Red Orchids Awardees for 2011. The LTO-10 is one of the first government offices, outside the Metro Manila, which was given the award as implementer of the DOHs drive of giving a halt for tobacco users in the public places. This was the information relayed by LTO-10 Regional Director Esteban M. Baltazar, Jr. yesterday in his office. Dir. Baltazar said that he was elated to receive the award from the Department of Health Manila represented by Dr. Jose R. Llacuna, Asst. Regional Director in Region 10, as none of them were present during the awarding ceremony.

He said that the award has given them due recognition in promoting healthy environment to its employees and to its client as tobacco free environment adding that he believes on the DOH's perception that smoking is dangerous to ones health. He also said that other government agencies in the region are now eyeing to join this move to promote a smoke free environment in the workplace and even to the point of apprehending smokers caught puffing in public places.

The other first government offices awardees were: Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Department of Education Region -1, Civil Service Commission Region-1, Population Commission (CAR) and the Department of Trade and Industry (CAR). It was learned that the DOH Red Orchid Awards is one way to recognize the best practices implemented by the DOH hospitals and the government offices in line with the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
