Nat’l arts fest comes to CDO

DAVAO CITY -- Instead of bringing gongs and bamboo music fete in tropical storm Sendong-stricken Cagayan de Oro City, the Philippine Arts Festival 2012 will be held in said city to provide music and dance therapy to the disaster survivors. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will be staging the PAF this year in CDO as well as in Iligan City to tender the arts therapy in lieu of the First Asian Festival of Gongs and Bamboo Music activity which was earlier programmed.
NCCA official Marichu Tellano told the media during the weekly Club 888 Forum that the music and dance therapy will be integrated during the debriefing and therapy sessions at some identified evacuation centers on the second week of February. "We're going to provide the therapy utilizing creative forms of the arts," stated Tellano, head of NCCA's Planning, Policy, Policy Formulation and Programming Division.
She explained that the gongs and bamboo music festival is supposed to bring together local and foreign gongs and bamboo ensembles for performances and workshops in CDO on February 20 to 24. But the typhoon calamity that severely devastated the city in December last year has caused the transformation of the festival into aiding the healing process for the survivors through music and dance, Tellano said. Though the said festival will push through in Baguio and Iloilo on February 25 to 28, she added.
The First Asian Festival of Gongs and Bamboo Music is one of PAF's seven arts festivities featured in time for this year's month-long celebration of the National Arts Month in February. PAF will open on January 29 at the Luneta Park in Manila. Aside from gongs and bamboo music fete, the other arts festivities to be held in various areas of the country are: the literary arts festival called Taboan, the Tanghal dramatic arts, Philippine International Visual Arts Festival: The Rizal Experience, Cinema Rehiyon, Architecture and the Sayaw Pinoy.
In Davao City, NCCA will bring the Sayaw Pinoy festivity on February 3 to 4 at the Philippine Nikkei-Jin Kai International School, University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP), SM City Davao and Abreeza Mall. Sayaw Pinoy, the longest running national dance tour featured in PAF, will bring in to the city the country's top dance companies to perform back-to-back with local dance troupes to showcase colorful tradition of dances and movements in the country. This year's celebration carries the theme: Tradisyon at Inobasyon which aims to "further advance local creativity in the arts." PIA
