KAPATAGAN, Lanao Del Sur - - - - A fun run to make minds and body healthy, following a planting of trees advocating environment's preservation was conducted at the boundary of Maguindanao and Kapatagan, January 14, here. With Takbo Kapatagan para sa Kalikasan as its theme, it emphasized how important our environment, is preserving them to avoid future calamities. The campaign started in the year 2001, in the reign of former Mayor, now a commissioner on National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, Commissioner Raida Maglangit.
In the year 2002, a municipal ordinance issued declaring Mt. Cabugao as municipal forest and two other watershed areas Mt. Calantimun and Mt. Linilayan. Maglangit said that in Lanao del Sur, there is only one municipality which has valued the importance of environment, and thats Kapatagan. "We are the one who did this, and we will do this monthly," she said as they were alarmed of what happen to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City a month ago.
"We sympathize to those who were affected by the calamity; and encourage those who were not to plant trees of any kind," thus said Kapatagan Vice Mayor Paisal Bansil. Bansil who has initiated the planting of trees aimed to plant more than 10,000 seeds all throughout their municipality as well as along the roadside. There were at least 2,000 mahogany seeds planted in a month, he said. This in coordination with the different stakeholders helping together to make this endeavor a success.
Current Mayor Nhazruddin Maglangit encouraged other mayors in Lanao del Sur to do the same saying, "Sana ito gayahin nila." The 51st Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Marlon Cesar Yadao among other battalions assigned in the area, expressed commitment to support the local government unit's undertakings as far as peace and security is concerned.
