The stigma of corruption in our judicial system should be addressed; there should be no corrupt lawyers as well as corrupt judges. The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) should be in the forefront in these efforts in policing our ranks to safeguard the integrity of our practice. This was the statement of IBP incoming national President Atty. Roan LIbarios after the meeting of lawyers held at the IBP Cagayan de Oro Chapter Office last Saturday afternoon.
Former Congressman and Governor of Agusan del Norte Atty. Libarios was elected as the new IBP national president last December is about to take office on July 1, called for the meeting of all IBP chapter presidents within eastern Mindanao district to discuss plans for the upcoming 13th National Convention of Lawyers on April 7 in Subic Bay. According to Atty. Libarios that he hopes to be able to add reforms and implement existing laws in the IBP once he assumes office. We hope to emphasize more on expanding our IBP funding for our legal aid services in order to help more of less fortunate people who can't afford their own lawyers.
"We hope to have a covenant signed by the judiciary and the stakeholders to improve litigation and cleanse our judicial process," Atty. Libarios said. Cagayan de Oro IBP chapter President Atty. Dale Bryan D. Mordeno was happy to have hosted the eastern Mindanao district meeting which consist of the Caraga Region, Davao, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin and Bukidnon.
"We hope that through our meeting today we would be able to find ways to rally more lawyers from our district to attend the convention. Major parts of the convention are lectures on various current legal issues by a panel of experts with the theme "Living up to the Standards of Integrity and Competence in the Legal Profession". The lectures form part of the IBP's mandatory continuing legal Education programs.
