Last March 2, the flood destroyed thousands worth of crops and agricultural products in Sitio San Vicente, Brgy Tongantongan and in Pulangi Riverside of Poblacion, all of Valencia City. The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of Valencia headed by Mayor Leandro Jose T. Catarata together with the army and other concerned stakeholders, conducted rescue operations and brought more than 800 families to the evacuation area.
The GMA Kapuso Foundation headed by Mariles Puentevella, who is also GMATV5-Davao Station Manager, provided canned goods, biscuits, rice and other dry goods to the affected families which was supported by the LGU and the Army.
During the distribution of the relief goods, Acting Commanding Officer of 8th IB Lt Col Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II emphasized to the people the need to be always prepared to help mitigate the effects of natural disasters such as this. He encouraged the conduct for disaster response and rescue training among the local residents, especially those in flood prone barangays.
According to Major General Victor A. Felix, Commanding General of the 4th Infantry "Diamond" Division that the activity has shown how much we can all accomplish if we all work hand in hand for a greater purpose. "We take pride in being a part of this noble act in helping out the people in the community especially in dire situations such as natural disasters," Felix said.
4th ID Spokesperson and Commanding Officer of the 4th Civil Military Operations (Kasaligan) Battalion Major Eugenio Julio C. Osias IV added that the Army is fully dedicated towards helping our communities not only at times of disaster but in building peace to insure a progressive future.
