DAVAO City--Col. Marcus Norman Flores is set to replace Col. Rey Leonardo Guerrero as commander of the Task Force Davao (TFD) in a simple turnover ceremony here on Saturday. Flores, who like Guerrero is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1984, is commander of the Army's 61st Infantry Battalion based in Capiz before his new assignment here. After Guerrero's stint in Davao City, he will be assigned as commander of the Army's 701st Infantry Brigade, replacing Brig. Gen. Leonilo Bongcawil, who is the new deputy commander of the 10th Infantry Division. The turnover of command will come as some sectors are calling for the abolition of the elite Army group, citing the absence of terrorism-related incidents in the city for the past couple of years. It can be recalled that TFD was an offshoot of the two bombings at the old Davao International Airport and Sasa wharf that claimed the lives of more than 50 people.
Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said the group would stay even if there have been no terrorist attacks since the special army group was formed almost a decade ago. "As of now, people cannot feel the importance of TFD because there have been no attacks on the city," she said. Duterte-Carpio stressed the role of TFD in keeping the peace. Meanwhile, the mayor gave Guerrero an outstanding grade of 9.5, with 10 as the highest, in his one-and-a-half year as chief of TFD. PNA
