The City Council has placed two villages in Barangay I-A in the Poblacion District of Davao City under a state of calamity after these areas were hit by fire last December 9, rendering some 70 families homeless. City Councilor Victorio U. Advincula, chair of the committee on social services, who also authored the resolution, said the affected areas were Purok 6 and 7 at Barangay I-A, Poblacion District. The fi re razed 50 houses. Advincula said the villages were placed under a state of calamity so that the city government could release part of its calamity fund for their rehabilitation.
The measure was approved under suspended rules. It stated that five percent of the barangay's calamity fund will be used to help the fire victims. Aside from the City Social Services and Development Office, which earlier provided financial assistance to the affected families, the city government also released P10,000 each to families whose houses were totally destroyed. Those whose houses were slightly damaged, including renters and sharers, received P5,000 financial aid each.
Meanwhile, a total of 63 families were affected after two fire incidents hit the city over the weekend. Davao City's Bureau of Fire Protection reported the damage to property was placed at P2.2 million. No one was hurt in both incidents. The first fire happened in Barangay Centro (San Juan), Agdao District at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday. It was placed under control after an hour. BFP said the houses in the area were made of light materials.
Another fire broke out at a neighboring area at Barangay T. Monteverde, also in Agdao District, at around 10:10 a.m. of the same day. Fire investigators said the blaze started at the building of lawyer Francis Yap where most families affected were renters and boarders of the building.
