BUTUAN City--Two high School students and two others were killed in a traffic accident after hitching a ride on a dump truck in Tandag City on Monday.
Police investigation revealed that the ten wheeler dump truck loaded with screened sand was traveling from Barangay San Isidro, Tandag City heading to the city proper when it side swept a tricycle traveling on the same direction after its brake allegedly malfunctioned. The truck then smashed into a house at a road corner killing 4 of the 6 truck passengers.
The fatalities were later identified as Jerome Domingues and a Roberto Gabe, Jr. both 3rd year high School students of Jacinto P. Elpa High School who hitch a ride on there way home from School and were riding on the top of the truck.
The two other fatalities were identified as Cornelia Mocay and Sherly Acebedo who seated at the front passenger seat died after being thrown towards the front of the vehicle. Two other 15 year old passengers seated at the back and the truck driver identified as Virgelio Bolonia Corlit survived the impact but sustained injuries and was immediately rushed to Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center for medical treatment.
"The accident occurred at around 4:00 in the afternoon along the Provincial Road of Cabiles Subdivision, Barangay Telaje in Tandag City. The tri- cycle driver and the owner of the house were not hurt in the accident," said Superintendent Martin Gamba, Caraga Region police public information officer.
Gamba further added that an investigation is now be- ing conducted by the Tandag City Police Station as to what liabilities that the driver will be facing since he was clearly to blame for accepting rides even though it was not a public transport vehicle.
