LPG-powered Cars decline in 2011

Cars powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) declined in 2011 from the previous year due to higher vehicle costs brought on by the government's withdrawing tax breaks, a report showed. The report by the Korea LPG Association showed the number of vehicles that run on the relatively clear gas reaching a little over 2.44 million units, down 10,584 units from 2010. It said the decline reduced the market share of LPG gas driven Cars to 13.3 percent in 2011 from 13.7 percent in the previous year.

"The decision to cut benefits that pushed up vehicle prices and moves by carmakers to make less LPG-driven automobiles all affected sales and market share," the association claimed. It pointed out that there are just 10 LPG-driven car models at present from 19 in 2001. "The drop in the numbers is in contrast to efforts taken by some foreign countries to increase eco-friendly LPG vehicles," it said. The latest report also showed that despite soaring prices, the number of gasoline and diesel Cars posted gains last year.

In 2011, there were 9.19 million gasoline Cars in the country, up 278,995 units from the year before, with diesel Cars reaching 6.70 million from 6.48 million vehicles in the previous year. Gasoline Cars made up 49.7 percent of all vehicles in the country, while the market share for diesel Cars reached 36.4 percent. PNA/YONHAP
