He’s beyond reproach; he commits no mistake

I DON'T know what to make of it. I just received an e-mail from my daughter Kathy in Canada. "Hi paps, just checking out kung okay ra mo diaha! How did you celebrate Valentine's Day? Were you wearing lavender, love at first sight, kang auntie?" I didn't send her a copy of my article about that color. Was it father-daughter mental telepathy at work? Anyway, I went to Pueblo the other day and had to pass through the skyway. Finally, I saw it and honestly, it looks beautiful. The color combination is superb. If the "lord" needs good points, let's start cleaning the surroundings. Let's start with our markets. When done, the rest would be easier.

The photograph shown him being flanked by preachers who prayed over him. I hope that would drive the stubbornness away from him and that he would start listening to the good counsel of friends and critics alike. Otherwise, it would just end up like what many believe--a mere propaganda or make believe. The "lord" should stop thinking that those who criticize him are 100 percent out to bring him down and out. Even if it's true, he has only one powerful defense--just do the right thing, fair not only for certain groups but for everyone.

Toward the end of the impeachment hearing the other day, Senator-Judge Allan Peter Cayetano's querries paved the way for better understanding of the RA 1405 or the Bank Secrecy Law.

"Republic Act 1405 and other subsequent laws provide certain exceptions to the prohibitions or disclosures. Bank deposit may be inquired into or examined:

• when there is written permission by the depositor;

• in cases of impeachment;

• upon order of a competent court in cases of bribery or dereliction of duty of public officials ;

• in cases when the money deposited is the subject of litigation. In my observation, the president of the bank was careful and a bit adamant in his answer not because he would be violating RA 1405 but for fear of a bank run or heavy withdrawal. Cayetano pointed out why in the aborted impeachment trial of Erap, Clarissa Ocampo was so at ease in answering questions regarding bank deposits. It was known later that she had the permission of her bank to do so because of the exception no. 2 which is "in cases of impeachment." Since only the President, the Vice President, the Chief Justice and a few more are impeachable, ordinary depositors should have no fear about their deposits, hidden or otherwise.

From Raul Padua: "I agree with the 'lord' (again, a borrowed term) when he says and insists in his radio program that he cannot be 'wronged' (to quote a reporter from another paper) for Typhoon Sendong, but I disagree with him when he said 'the flood just caught us off-guard.' He could have not been caught off-guard had he listened to the warnings of DENR and Pagasa. "Sendong was, as one man put it, an act of God. No man, not even the 'lord' could stop it. But what the 'lord' could have stopped was the people, his poor and oppressed, from building houses and living in areas identified by DENR as geohazards. What the 'lord' could have done was raise the alert when Pagasa warned of Sendong's Landfall two days before. What the 'lord' could have done was equip the city's rescue team to cope with emergencies and have them always on the alert and ready to respond.

"The 'lord' maintains his innocence claiming that he has not committed any mistake. He should tell this to the recipients of his 'piso-piso' program in Cala-cala who perished in the tragedy. Perhaps he did not commit a mistake in allowing mining along the Iponan watershed area. Mining, as his toadies claim, did not cause the flood anyway. Perhaps he did not commit a mistake in turning a deaf ear to the continued cutting of trees in the city's remaining forest covers. Certainly, he did not commit a mistake in dumping the dead bodies in the city's Landfill. After all, his lackey owned it up after the 'lord,' in a previous statement, admitted having the bodies brought there for 'health reason.' "The 'lord,' indeed, has not committed any mistake. Blame it all on the Cagayanons who signed the recall movement. Blame it all on Save CDO Now and even Gov. Moreno for politicking. He is beyond reproach. He is 'lord' after all."
